The
story of the simple soul corrupted and destroyed by civilization
has been told in many ways ad nauseam. In prizefighting
it is the story of Louis Phal, a stocky Senegalese tribesman who
joined the French Army in World War I, wiped out a German
machine gun nest single-handed, became light heavyweight
champion of the world and died of bullet wounds in a Manhattan
gutter, after surviving a stabbing earlier in the same year. |
